ABOUT THE STORY
Gunahon Ka Devta is a timeless love story. Chandar and Sudha are the main characters of the novel. Pammi, Binti, and Dr. Shukla also play significant roles.
The story begins in Allahabad, where Chandar stays in Dr. Shukla’s house because he is his student. Sudha is Dr. Shukla’s young daughter. They fight, they care for each other, and slowly their bond becomes deep.
Chandar becomes almost like a devta for Sudha—she never refuses him. Their affection slowly turns into love, but neither proposes. We realise their love only after Sudha’s marriage is fixed, when both suffer silently.
Pammi is a beautiful, divorced Christian woman. Chandar meets her because Dr. Shukla asks him to write an essay on her. Their friendship grows, and they begin spending more time together.
Quoted line:
Chandar believes sanskar is more important than money, because without values the world becomes a golden palace occupied by devils.
Sudha doesn’t want to marry, but Chandar forces her for reasons she doesn’t understand. When he slaps her, Sudha softly asks:
This shows her deep care for Chandar.
But when Pammi asks Sudha, “Do you love Chandar and will you marry him?” she replies,
Before Sudha’s marriage, they meet and she says:
Sudha is not interested in marriage but is forced to agree.
After her marriage, the house becomes like a cemetery. Chandar slowly becomes hollow and withdrawn. He stops replying to Sudha’s letters, avoids Binti, because for him:
When Chandar meets Pammi’s brother—whose wife had run away—his words poison Chandar’s mind. He says all women are selfish, but it is hypocrisy.
Later, when Chandar meets Pammi, she says:
At this moment Chandar realises his mistakes, remembers Sudha, and understands the depth of womanhood and love.
Memorable dialogues between Chandar and Sudha:
Dr. Shukla writes a letter asking Chandar to come immediately to Delhi. Sudha is extremely ill and mentally unstable. She says things she doesn’t even understand. She tells Chandar not to cry, because it hurts her.
After Sudha’s death, Chandar and Binti go to the Ganga for asthi visarjan. The final line touches the heart:
