POST-MATCH ANALYSIS
Positives (Strengths)
1. Incredible Opening Pair
Jaiswal and Rahul proved themselves as solid openers. Jaiswal scored a century in the first innings, and Rahul added a valuable 42. In the second innings, Rahul’s 137 was vital. Though Jaiswal failed in the second innings, the opening partnership remains one of India’s strongest assets.
2. Captain & Vice-Captain's Impact as Batsmen
Shubman Gill justified his title as the "Prince of Indian Cricket" with a captain's knock of 127* in the first innings. Though he couldn't repeat it in the second, his leadership showed promise.
Rishabh Pant was the standout performer. With centuries in both innings (134 & 118), he became only the second wicketkeeper in Test history to achieve this feat—the first being Zimbabwe's Andy Flower.
3. Jassy Jaisa Koi Nahi
Jasprit Bumrah once again showed why he’s considered the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) among current bowlers. His 5-wicket haul in the first innings helped India maintain parity. Though he went wicketless in the second innings, his economy was tight and disciplined.
4. Five Centuries in the Match
Yashasvi Jaiswal – 101
Shubman Gill – 127*
KL Rahul – 137
Rishabh Pant – 134 & 118
Negatives (Weaknesses/Concerns)
1. Dropped Catches
As the saying goes, “Catches win matches.” India’s sloppy fielding cost them dearly. Multiple chances were missed, releasing pressure and allowing England to build partnerships. Shubman Gill also acknowledged this in the post-match presentation.
2. Lower-Order Collapse
India’s top order laid strong foundations, but the lower order collapsed dramatically:
First innings: lost 7 wickets for 51 runs
Second innings: lost 6 wickets for 31 runs
The team must work on contributions from the lower middle and tail-enders.
3. Sai Sudharsan & Karun Nair
Both players were dismissed for ducks in the first innings. In the second innings, Sudharsan scored 30, and Karun managed 20—better, but not match-defining. Expectations are higher, and they’ll need to prove their worth in upcoming games.
4. Lack of Support for Bumrah in Bowling
While Bumrah took 5 wickets, other bowlers struggled
Prasidh Krishna: 5 wickets, but very expensive
Shardul Thakur: 2 wickets, inconsistent
Jadeja and Siraj bowled economically but couldn't take crucial wickets
India’s bowling lacked penetration in the fourth innings.
Suggestions for 2nd Test
No change needed in the top order. But some changes in bowling may be considered:
Replace Shardul Thakur with Arshdeep Singh or Nitish Kumar Reddy
Consider resting Bumrah and including Kuldeep Yadav (only if Bumrah needs rest)
Major Focus: Improve fielding – work on catching, especially in the slip cordon and close-in positions.
India fought hard and delivered individual brilliance, especially with the bat, but poor fielding and a weak lower order hurt their chances. With minor adjustments and a sharper approach in the field, the team can bounce back in the next match. As Shreyas Ayyar said " WE LOST BATTLE BUT NOT WAR "
